Dr Joseph H. Kler, MD
Ophthalmologist
Joseph H. Kler, MD, (1903-1983), was born in Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical College in 1925. Dr. Kler, an ophthalmologist, practiced for over half a century in New Brunswick, NJ. In 1929, he was the first staff physician and first team physician for Rutgers University. From his office at Rutgers, Dr. Kler broadcast a weekly health radio show on WOR.
Dr. Kler was on staff at Middlesex General Hospital (now, RWJ University Hospital) and was chief of ophthalmology and otolaryngology at St. Peter's Medical Center for thirty years. He served as president of the staff at both hospitals. Dr. Kler was past president of Middlesex County Medical Society and the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology.
Dr. Kler's civic-mindedness led to his founding and serving as president (1971-83) of East Jersey Olde Towne Inc., a restored colonial village in Johnson Park, Piscataway. Historic buildings from around Middlesex County were moved there to be preserved, such as the Indian Queen Tavern which stood at the foot of Albany Street in New Brunswick.
Dr. Kler was an expert stamp collector of stamps with a medical theme. He was the author of the Minkus Publications' Medicine on Stamps (1969) containing interesting accounts of medical history; for ten years, he was the author of yearly supplements. In 1970, the Home News called him "the world's leading medical stamp collector." Dr. Kler was author of a feature article on medical stamps in Medical Times.
Dr. Kler's extensive Medicine on Stamps collections consisted of over 16,000 stamps in forty-four albums. He donated the collection to the Cardinal Spellman Philatelic Museum at Regis College, Weston, Massachusetts, a museum of which he was a founder. A small portion of his stamp collection was presented to RWJMS by his daughter, Marjorie Kler Freeman. Dr. Kler was the recipient of the Freedom Foundations' award and of the grand award of the American Topical Association (stamps).
Dr. Robert B. Kyle, MD
Hematologist
Dr Kyle is a multiple myeloma pioneer whose groundbreaking work has changed the practice of hematology. Among his many honors are the David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award and the Wallace H. Coulter Award from the American Society of Hematology. They are the highest honors bestowed by these two groups, and he is one of only two persons to receive both awards.
Dr Kyle stated “After I received a little recognition from exhibiting my stamp collection at national shows, a JAMA editor asked me to edit previously published stamp vignettes for a book they planned to publish. I asked my friend, Dr. Marc Shampo, who also was interested in stamps, to help. Then JAMA asked us to continue writing stamp vignettes, until Mayo Clinic Proceedings took over about 15 years later and continues to publish the vignettes to the present time. I don’t spend as much time on it anymore, but it’s still an interest of mine,”
Dr. Marc A. Shampo, MD
Organic Chemistry Professor
Dr. Marc A. Shampo, was born October 20, 1924 in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Norman and Antoinette (Rondou) Shampo. He proudly served in the United States Army during WWII and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a PHD in Organic Chemistry. He taught high school science in Wisconsin and was a chemistry professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. He then worked as a medical editor in publications at Mayo Clinic until his retirement. He was an author, avid reader, stamp collector, and football fan. Dr. Marc A. Shampo, 94, of Rochester, died Thursday April 25, 2019 at Mayo Clinic Hospital St. Mary's Campus.

Dr Rudy J. F. Burgmeijer, MD
Consultant in Vaccinology
Rudy J. F. Burgmeijer (1944), MD, MPH, RN, was originally trained as a teacher in biology and Dutch language, but after a few years switched to nursing and later to medicine. He specialised in child public health and became interested in vaccinology. In this field he has worked as Medical Director of the former governmental Netherlands Vaccine Institute (NVI) in Bilthoven (since 2012 Bilthoven Biologicals B.V. (BBio), part of the Serum Institute of India that belongs to the Cyrus Poonawalla Group). He retired in 2009, but continued to work as Qualified Person Pharmacovigilance for NVI and BBio till March 2018. Nowadays he is working as a freelance consultant in vaccinology and lectures at Dutch universities and the Municipal Health Authority of Amsterdam.
From the first edition in 1993 he is editor in chief and (co-)author of many chapters of the Dutch-Flemish Handboek vaccinaties, the first (and still only) handbook on vaccinology in the Dutch language.
His interest in collecting medical stamps goes back to the time he was a medical student.
He is the author of "Health Care Professionals and Medical Scientists on Postage Stamps" book In three volumes with a total of 2,316 pages. In his book, Dr Rudy Burgmeijer has brought together 4,012 reproductions of stamps from his collection with 1,468 interesting biographies of professionals and scientists in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacology, and veterinary medicine. Thus giving an insight into medical history from thousands of years before Christ till the present day.
Dr Lindsay F Haas, MD
Neurologist
Lindsay Haas died in 2011. He was a distinguished Wellington Hospital Neurologist (1974 - 2011), and was Head of Neurology from 1988 - 2009.
In the late 1980s Lindsay developed an interest in the medical aspects of philately. He presented a paper on the subject to the annual scientific meeting of the RACP in 1989, entitled 'Doctors that have been licked'. There followed a remarkable series of publications in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. From 1991 to 2005, no less than 146 articles by Lindsay appeared in that journal, each one giving a mini-biography of a medical personality appearing on a postage stamp.
Dr Jayant V. Pai-Dhungat, MD
Internal Medicine
Dr. Jayant Pai Dhungat is a Professor of Medicine, TN Medical College and BYL Nair Hospital, Mumbai and an esteemed member of Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM). His large series of articles depicting medical philately subjects and published in the Journal of the Association of Physicians of India (JAPI), is famous and very informative.

Dr Amir is a radiology consultant and professor in Mansoura University, Egypt with a wide spectrum of interests including medicine, history, medical education, quality management, philately, watch collecting hobby, car model collecting hobby and many more. He has more than 30 years of experience in philately with special passion for the medical theme. Dr Amir is a member of the American and Saudi Philatelic Associations and his Medical Philately collection is considered one of the largest ever.
